mon pm. 05.31.10

wow... the heat made no delay in returning. the high on this monday afternoon hit 29c/84f at the weathergeek office way up in the forest at the top of mcleod ganj. lots of sun today, and we expect the same tomorrow, with a further rise in temperatures. most of wednesday will also be very warm and dry... but changes will begin to appear by wednesday evening. right now, it's looking like the latter half of the week will be very unstable, with an increase in humidity, cloudiness and thunderstorm potential. try to schedule the outdoor fun between now and wednesday afternoon if you can... and make contingency plans if you have activities scheduled for thursday into the weekend...

MONDAY NIGHT: clear skies. not as cool and comfortable as the previous few nights.
low: 21C (69F)

TUESDAY: mostly sunny and even warmer.
high: 31C (87F)

WEDNESDAY: partly cloudy and very warm. slight chance of a thunderstorm by evening.
high: 31C (88F)

THURSDAY: partly to mostly cloudy with a good chance of a few showers and thunderstorms. quite humid, but not as warm.
high: 29C (84F)

FRIDAY: mostly cloudy and cooler with periods of showers and thunderstorms likely.
high: 26C (78F)

SATURDAY: still a good chance of some showers and storms. breezy and quite mild for june.
high: 24C (75F)

mon am. 05.31.10

the next three days are looking stellar. clear skies early on this monday morning... and the sun should be out in force for most of the day. ditto that for tuesday and wednesday, along with a steady warming trend. the end of the week looks a bit dicey, however. a strong upper-level storm system will begin to affect the area by wednesday evening, and then the chance for thunderstorms really cranks up for thursday, right into the weekend. the first part of the week is definitely the best time to schedule hikes, picnics and other outings...

MONDAY: sunny in the morning, a few mountain clouds in the afternoon. warmer.
high: 28C (83F)

MONDAY NIGHT: clear skies. comfortable.
low: 21C (69F)

sun pm. 05.30.10

...and it did turn out to be a near perfect sunday. lots of sun in the morning, a few clouds in the afternoon, and temps maxing out around 26c/80f. looking ahead, our warming trend will continue through wednesday, but it's now looking likely that we won't equal the extreme heat of last week. still, it will be plenty warm, with humidity on the increase by wednesday. the latest computer models are bringing in some fierce thunderstorm activity for the end of the week which definitely bears close watching. along with the storm potential will come some cooler temperatures. trekkers: head to the mountains during the first half of the week!

SUNDAY NIGHT: becoming mostly clear. very pleasant.
low: 19C (67F)

MONDAY: lots of sunshine with warmer temps.
high: 28C (83F)

TUESDAY: sunny... warming trend continues.
high: 31C (87F)

WEDNESDAY: hazy sunshine early... but increasing clouds with a chance of thunderstorms by evening. still very warm.
high: 31C (88F)

THURSDAY: partly to mostly cloudy with periods of showers and thunderstorms likely. not as warm.
high: 29C (84F)

FRIDAY: much cooler, with a good chance of showers and storms.
high: 26C (78F)

sun am. 05.30.10

it's sunny early on this sunday morning, and the satellite pic shows that the storm system of the last two days has weakened and lifted off into central tibet. as the sun works on the atmosphere and warms things up this afternoon, we may still have to keep a lookout for a stray thundershower, but the vast majority of the day will be almost picture perfect. the advertised warming trend is still on schedule for the next 3-4 days, but by thursday, another disturbance will move in and increase our storm chances again. good weather for outdoor activities and mountain exploration during the first half of the week...

SUNDAY: mostly sunny in the morning, partly cloudy by afternoon. warmer, with a brief, isolated thundershower possible.
high: 27C (81F)

SUNDAY NIGHT: becoming mostly clear. comfortable.

sat pm. 05.29.10

thunderstorms...sunshine...thunderstorms...sunshine. that has been our saturday. the storms have been accompanied by lots of wind and a decent amount of rainfall today. total precipitation in mcleod ganj since all this started on thursday night has been in the 0.5-0.8" range (13-20mm). very welcome moisture!! i'm a little nervous to say this, but it appears that the upper-level disturbance and instability responsible for the storm action is shifting eastward and weakening. that means that apart from some isolated thundershower activity tonight and perhaps on sunday afternoon, a return to dry and warmer weather will be in order for the next several days. it may not get as warm as it was last week, but some summer-ish temps are definitely on the horizon...

SATURDAY NIGHT: partly cloudy and pleasant. can't rule out one more thundershower overnight.
low: 17C (63F)

SUNDAY: partly to mostly sunny skies. warmer, with a brief, isolated afternoon thundershower possible.
high: 27C (81F)

MONDAY: lots of sunshine. considerably warmer.
high: 29C (85F)

TUESDAY: warming trend continues, with plenty of sun.
high: 31C (88F)

WEDNESDAY: hazy sunshine. very warm.
high: 32C (89F)

THURSDAY: hazy sunshine, with increasing clouds. very warm, with a chance of an afternoon thunderstorm.
high: 32C (89F)

sat 05.29.10

wild and crazy thunderstorms still roaming through the area early on this saturday morning. there remains a cold pocket in the upper atmosphere over kashmir and himachal pradesh, and with the very warm and humid airmass lurking just to our south, we've still got quite a bit of instability to deal with today. so... it looks like our saturday will be touch-and-go, due to the continuing thunderstorm potential. we're still expecting things to calm down for the latter half of the weekend. temperatures will be mild again today, but the next warming trend will begin on sunday, and continue right into the middle of next week.

SATURDAY: partly cloudy skies with scattered thunderstorms still possible. comfortable temps!
high: 26C (79F)

SATURDAY NIGHT: chance of an evening thundershower, otherwise becoming mostly clear.
low: 18C (65F)

SUNDAY: partly to mostly sunny and warmer. only a small chance of a brief thundershower.

fri pm. 05.28.10

we've already had one round of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, and chances are very good that we'll get more action tonight. rainfall thus far has been light, but the satellite pic shows some major storms to our northwest in kashmir, and also developing to our southwest over punjab. despite the mugginess and murky clouds, temps today have been relatively comfortable. everyone seems to be enjoying the break from the heat. rain chances will diminish considerably tomorrow, and then it will be back to heatwave-like conditions as we move into the new week...

FRIDAY NIGHT: mostly cloudy with more showers and thunderstorms likely. there is a possibility of strong storms with high winds, hail and heavy rain.
low: 19C (66F)

SATURDAY: partly cloudy and warmer. only a slight chance of a thundershower.
high: 28C (82F)

SUNDAY: mostly sunny and warming up, with low humidity.
high: 29C (85F)

high: 32C (89F)

WEDNESDAY: hazy sunshine. very warm.
high: 32C (89F)

fri am. 05.28.10

murky skies this morning (thanks to dirt and dust from our neighbors to the southwest), after a night of off and on thunderstorms. we had lots of wind, lots of lightning, lots of thunder, even some hail, but very little rain. the atmosphere will remain unstable all day today, so keep in mind that showers and storms could pop up any time. even on saturday we can't rule out a random thundershower. temperatures will be quite a bit cooler the next couple of days, thanks to the clouds and storms... but as soon as this system moves out, the heat will build back in. SO... enjoy the respite while it lasts...

FRIDAY: partly to mostly cloudy and cooler. a good chance of another couple of rounds of showers and thunderstorms.
high: 28C (82F)

FRIDAY NIGHT: still a good chance of a few showers or storms. otherwise partly cloudy.
low: 19C (67F)

thu pm. 05.27.10

cue humidity. cue clouds. now, cue thunderstorms...? today has unfolded according to plan. very warm and increasingly humid this afternoon, with a gradual increase in clouds. some thunderheads are boiling just to our north and west this evening, as a nice ripple in the jetstream progresses in our direction. this upper-level disturbance will act on the heat and moisture already in place, and bring us a decent chance of some shower and thunderstorm activity through friday. temperatures will be significantly cooler tomorrow (friday), but since it's the end of may, expect the heat to quickly race back in. we could be seeing more extreme heat by the first part of next week.

THURSDAY NIGHT: partly cloudy with a good chance of a few showers and thunderstorms developing. turning breezy and a bit cooler overnight.
low: 22C (71F)

FRIDAY: partly to mostly cloudy with a period or two of showers/storms possible. muggy, but not as hot.
high: 28C (83F)

SATURDAY: partly cloudy and pleasantly warm, with a slight chance of a stray thundershower.
high: 29C (84F)

SUNDAY: mostly sunny and a little warmer.

MONDAY: lots of sunshine, but heating up.
high: 32C (89F)

TUESDAY: sunny but a bit hazy. very warm.
high: 32C (89F)

thu am. 05.27.10

a difficult forecast this morning... an upper-level disturbance will be dropping southeast across the area later today and friday, but it remains to be seen how much moisture will be available to stir up some showers and storms. it looks like the very warm temperatures will continue today, but then let up as we move into the weekend. right now, it looks like our best chance of thunderstorms will be from late this afternoon through friday, with high temps friday considerably cooler than they've been the last several days. but... heatwave #2 appears to be waiting in the wings for next week...

THURSDAY: sunny in the morning, but becoming partly cloudy during the afternoon. very warm and more humid with a chance of a thunderstorm by late afternoon.
high: 32C (90F)

THURSDAY NIGHT: partly cloudy with an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms.

still lots of people around town talking about how they can't remember it EVER being this hot here. it was 36c/97f down near the dalai lama's temple this afternoon, and my high temp way up near the mountaineering center and tushita was over 32c/90f. thankfully, a change is on the horizon. there will be a rapid increase in humidity on thursday, along with an increase in clouds and thunderstorm chances, as a fast-moving upper-level disturbance dives southeast into kashmir. muggy and potentially thundery weather will continue on friday, but more comfortable temperatures will filter in, and remain for most of the weekend. keep an eye to the sky in anticipation of some rapidly developing storms if you plan to be out and about on thursday and friday...

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: clear to partly cloudy skies. very uncomfortable sleeping weather.
low: 24c (76F)

THURSDAY: becoming partly cloudy, more humid, with a good chance of some thunderstorms developing in the afternoon.
high: 32C (89F)

FRIDAY: partly to mostly cloudy with a few showers or thunderstorms still possible. turning cooler.

MONDAY: dry and warmer with plenty of sunshine.
high: 31C (88F)

wed am. 05.26.10

clear skies early this morning... with almost unlimited sunshine expected again today. actually, today could be the peak of the recent heatwave, as an upper-level disturbance will drop in from the west-northwest on thursday and friday, bringing an increase in clouds and thunderstorm chances. but it's now looking like behind this minor storm system, the heat will build right back in after a short respite. yesterday it was 32c/90f near the mountaineering center at the top of mcleod ganj, and 34c/94f near the dalai lama's temple. expect temps at least that warm again today...

WEDNESDAY: some haze, otherwise mostly sunny and hot.
high: 33C (91F)

tue pm. 05.25.10

each day recently has been warmer than the previous day... it looks like we'll have at least another day of that trend before the heat peaks, and then begins to wane by the end of the week. all eyes are on another weak storm in the upper atmosphere that is scheduled to arrive by thursday afternoon. this will bring us a chance of thunderstorms, and then deliver some cooler air in its wake. currently, computer model guidance is in disagreement on how much rainfall potential exists... so considering the recent "bark and no bite" thunder, for now will just mention a possibility of storms thursday and friday... stay tuned!

TUESDAY NIGHT: mostly clear skies. quite warm.
low: 24C (75F)

WEDNESDAY: sunshine again, but haze will thicken. still rather hot.
high: 33C (91F)

THURSDAY: becoming partly cloudy, with an increasing chance of a thunderstorm by the afternoon and evening. still very warm.

tue am. 05.25.10

the satellite pic shows generally clear skies from the persian gulf to central tibet this morning... that doesn't happen very often! a ridge of high pressure in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere is the culprit, and will keep temperatures very warm to HOT across the area for at least the next couple of days. we're watching for an increase in haze and dust, as a west-southwesterly breeze taps into the dirt reserves across the punjab. haha. rain chances are minimal, but increase a bit late thursday into friday, as a cooler airmass nudges in our direction...

today was the warmest day of the summer season and the year... 31.7c/89.1f recorded at the weathergeek office. and unbelievably, the computer model guidance and satellite photos confirm a continuation of the heatwave for the next 3 days or so. it is really rare to get temperatures exceeding 32c/90f in mcleod ganj... it only occurs a handful of times at the most every year. we're watching another upper-level disturbance now over the southern caspian sea, which will bring our next decent chance of thunderstorms, along with some slightly cooler temps by the end of the week...

MONDAY NIGHT: mostly clear, uncomfortably warm...
low: 23C (74F)

TUESDAY: hot, with hazy sunshine. a very slight chance of a brief afternoon thundershower.

full sunshine on schedule for this morning...which will allow for temperatures to rapidly warm up today. there could still be enough instability today to see an isolated thundershower or two develop over the mountains during the afternoon, but any rainfall will be very light and spotty. unbelievably warm air continues to build over northern india, in all levels of the atmosphere, and that means we'll be seeing easily the warmest days of the year this week. it's still a good idea to stay tucked away in the mountains... as the plains are going to be pushing 50c/122f!!

MONDAY: sunny early, then partly cloudy during the afternoon with a slight chance of a thundershower. warmer.

winding up a great sunday... had some clouds and thundershowers off and on during the morning and early afternoon, which kept temperatures quite a bit cooler than they were on saturday. but unfortunately, the rainfall was barely measurable. get ready for a return to the relentless heat as we head into the new week. afternoon temps will meet or exceed saturday's high of 31c/88f a few times during the next several days. rain chances remain spotty and relatively insignificant...

menacing, ominous-looking clouds early this sunday morning, with thunder rumbling. a weak upper-level disturbance is moving through kashmir at the moment, and will deliver some scattered showers and thunderstorms to the area today and tonight. although moisture is lacking, any rainfall will be a very welcome respite in the middle of this mid-summer heatwave. temps will be a bit less warm today, but will bounce back quickly tomorrow through thursday. 32-33c (around 90f) is likely all the way to dharamkot and naddi later this week, with highs near 40c (104f) down in dharamsala. in the meantime, enjoy the minor break today!

the advertised heatwave has arrived. the temperature this afternoon at the weathergeek office at the top of mcleod ganj hit 31c/88f. some bubbling thunderheads developed over the dhauladar range late this afternoon, but it looks like any rainfall is confined to the lahaul and spiti valleys. still watching a ripple in the upper atmosphere, which will move through tonight and sunday. that means we may get a little heat relief in the form of a thunderstorm or two. but after that, lots of sun, lots of heat on tap for the coming week. got a fan?

SATURDAY NIGHT: partly cloudy with a slight chance of a passing thundershower. warmest night of the year...?

skies remain 100% cloudless early this saturday morning, so the sun will begin baking us right away when it peeks over the mountain at about 645am. we will be above 30c (86f) for the next several days... and temps may go considerably higher than that, as a massive dome of hot air continues to build from pakistan into the northern half of india. a bit of energy in the upper atmosphere is going to pass through later today and sunday, and that means we have to include the chance of a random thunderstorm or two... but any extended, significant heat relief will be lacking, all the way into the middle of next week...

i think it's been at least a few weeks since we've had a day with virtually ZERO clouds. i spotted a couple of wimpy cumulus-wannabes over the mountains around 1pm, but they quickly dissipated. anyway, today was DAY ONE of the heatwave that will be with us for the next several days. a ridge of high pressure is building throughout all levels of the atmosphere, allowing the heat to continue its advance into the middle of next week. the only fly in the ointment is a weak upper-level disturbance that will quickly move across kashmir and himachal pradesh late saturday into sunday. that will bring in the possibility of isolated thunderstorms... but at this point, it looks like any thunderstorm activity will be short-lived, and will do little to stifle the heat...

FRIDAY NIGHT: clear skies. on the warm side...

computer models are still on track this morning with building a massive heatwave across most of northern india during the next few days. temperatures down on the plains are going to be well into the 40sC (110+F), with delhi expected to reach 50C (122F) over the weekend. it will be interesting to see just how warm we'll get way up here at 1800m/6000ft, but it is likely that we'll see some temps well above 30C (86F)...which doesn't happen extremely often on a yearly basis. rain chances will be minimal, but it looks like the best shot of some thunderstorm action will be on sunday afternoon. stay tuned!!

super nice thursday... we had lots of sun in the morning, then a build-up of clouds on the mountains from noon into the early evening which yielded a few sprinkles. temps were comfortable. still forecasting a himalayan HEATWAVE for the next several days. humidity will be low, but temperatures will be on the rise. rain chances are slim, but we still can't rule out the random PM thundershower as afternoon heat rises into the cool air over the mountains. all in all, a great few days ahead for outdoor activities...

we did indeed get one last thundershower late this afternoon... tuck that away in your memory, because there's a good chance that will be it for a while. the summer season peaks in northern india in late may and june, and it appears that we are set to see an onslaught of summer "heat" as we head into the weekend, along with only a small chance of a brief, isolated storm here and there. temps will likely surpass 30C (86F)... with plenty of sun and (thankfully) relatively low humidity.

tuesday was full of clouds and thundershowers, but it seems that rainfall was relatively light, around two-tenths of an inch or so (5mm). we did have a few minutes of small hail, once during the afternoon, and again in the evening. skies are mostly clear early this morning, but there is still a decent shot at showers and storms today as this storm system slowly pulls off to the east. massive warm-up on tap for the end of the week!!

tue pm. 05.18.10

thick clouds, lots of thunder, some wind... and less than .10" of rain today (so far). the rain we did receive was falling through dusty air, and delivered some nice mud blotches on everything. thank you punjab and rajasthan!! the strong upper-level storm system that has been moving through the past 2 days will finally exit stage right by late wednesday. that means we still have another 24 hours or so to deal with occasional showers and storms. storm chances disappear and warmer temps return again by the end of the week...

TUESDAY NIGHT: partly to mostly cloudy with a good chance of some showers and/or thunderstorms.
low: 18C (64F)

tue am. 05.18.10

waking up to 22C/72F this morning. thick clouds and rather humid... almost feels like a mid-monsoon morning. a strong weather system is plowing across northern india right now, and will stir up more showers and thunderstorms both today and wednesday. the question is: how much sunshine will we get? the sunshine will warm up the lower levels of the atmosphere and create an unstable situation, which will enhance strong thunderstorm development. a good day to be aware of rapidly changing weather conditions...

TUESDAY: partly to mostly cloudy and quite humid, with a few showers and thunderstorms likely. a strong/severe storm is possible.

mon pm. 05.17.10

what a weird day... clouds all day long, a few periods of showers with a little thunder, but only barely measurable rainfall so far. temperatures were much cooler than expected, due to the thick cloud cover. rain chances continue tomorrow and wednesday, and since the airmass is very unstable, a little sunshine during the day will contribute to the development of some big thunderstorms. temps are entirely dependent on sunshine breaking through the clouds. rain chances disappear altogether by the end of the week...

MONDAY NIGHT: partly to mostly cloudy with a good chance of a few showers or a thunderstorm.
low: 18C (65F)

TUESDAY: partly cloudy, warm and muggy with a few thunderstorms likely.

*UPDATE 3:54pm... thick clouds and off and on showers have kept the temperature hovering around 22C/71F all day!! high temperature revised way way downward...

we've already had a round of thundershowers early this monday morning, which cooled things down a bit after a warm and muggy night. periods of showers and thunderstorms are likely between now and wednesday, and a few of these could be whoppers, with heavy rain, hail and strong winds. but we'll still see glimpses of sunshine between storms, and that will allow temperatures to remain on the warm side this afternoon. drying out by the latter half of the week...

MONDAY: mostly cloudy with occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm. much cooler!

sun pm. 05.16.10

*UPDATE @ 7:37pm... i recorded 30C (86F) this afternoon, which is the highest temperature of the season and the highest of 2010.

our high temperature today was a tie for the warmest of the spring summer season, at around 85F/29.5C. we also had plenty of sun, although the haze is becoming more apparent, and there was a clap or two of thunder from the mountains during the early afternoon. hold on tight for some bumpy weather starting tomorrow and lasting through wednesday. big thunderstorms are quite likely, along with some very summer-ish heat and humidity. i won't be surprised to see a couple of inches of rain (or more) during the first half of the week.

SUNDAY NIGHT: partly cloudy and rather warm. slight chance of a late night storm.
low: 22C (71F)

MONDAY: mix of clouds and sun, very warm and humid, with an increasing chance of thunderstorms.
high: 30C (86F)

skies are 100% clear early on this sunday morning. we'll see a good amount of sunshine today, although visibilities will be reduced due to hazy skies. temperatures will be near the warmest of the year during the next two or three days, but lookout for an increasing chance of thunderstorms from monday through wednesday. some locally heavy rainfall, hail and high winds are possible with one or two of these storms. in the meantime, enjoy a fine sunday!

weather was quiet across the area today... some afternoon clouds, but no thunder for the first time in several days. tomorrow should be storm-less as well, but the chance of showers and thunderstorms will dramatically increase late tomorrow night, and continue into wednesday. we'll also see a rather dramatic warm-up, and a surge of muggy air will accompany those thunderstorm chances during the beginning of the new week.

friday's high temperature of 27.8C (82F) was the warmest of the month thus far. a gorgeous saturday morning shaping up... comfortable and breezy, with lots of sunshine expected. rain and storm chances will be very small over the weekend, with temperatures continuing to warm up. we're looking at a much better chance of thunderstorms by monday and tuesday, while temperatures remain very warm, and humidity climbs...

rumbling thunder during the afternoon actually yielded a brief shower... otherwise the day was warm with a good amount of sun. a sort of himalayan "heat wave" is in the forecast for the next several days, as the upper-air disturbance spinning around over us during the past week shifts eastward. the weekend should be dry, but humidity and thunderstorm chances increase as we head into the new week. bonafide summer-style weather will be in full swing...

FRIDAY NIGHT: slight chance of a thundershower before midnight, otherwise becoming mostly clear. not as cool.

the slow-moving disturbance which has kept thunder rumbling around the area the past few days is finally pulling off to the east this morning. we'll still have a chance of a shower or thunderstorm today, but rain chances disappear almost completely for the weekend. some of the warmest air of the year is building across pakistan and northern india, and will remain with us for the next several days.

thu pm. 05.13.10

skunked again, as far as rainfall goes. we had off and on clouds today with menacing skies from time to time, but no organized rain or thunderstorm activity. i'll keep rain chances in the forecast overnight, as the satellite pic this evening shows a circulation center just to our north over kashmir and ladakh... that means some thunder action could still develop. but rain chances will decrease tomorrow, and over the weekend, as temperatures INCREASE. then expect better chances of thunderstorms to return by monday.

THURSDAY NIGHT: partly cloudy and rather warm. still a chance of a few showers or storms.
low: 20C (68F)... closer to 16C (60F) if storms develop...

i guess i should have been forecasting "thunder" instead of "storms" the last couple of days. we've had plenty of ugly clouds and rumbling thunder during the afternoons, but very little rainfall. we're holding out for another shot today, into tonight... then it looks like storm chances will actually diminish as we head toward the weekend. but the heat and mugginess will be on the rise!

THURSDAY: mix of clouds and sun, with a good chance of a few showers or thunderstorms. warmer.

wed pm. 05.12.10

we've had another afternoon of rumbling thunder, gusty winds, and a few random drops of rain. these afternoon convective clouds just can't seem to muster enough energy to squeeze out anything else. despite this, we can't remove the mention of thunderstorms from the forecast until the weekend, when a more stable airmass moves in. temperatures will continue to warm up... in fact, it'll be almost as warm as it ever gets around these parts...

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: still a chance of some showers or a thunderstorm. otherwise partly cloudy.

THURSDAY: partly cloudy with a continuing chance of a thunderstorm. warmer and more humid.

all has been quiet since the storms early tuesday morning, but that should change later today. sunshine will gradually give way to cumulus clouds building over the mountains this afternoon, with a good chance of a round of storms by the middle or late afternoon. temperatures will be warming up the rest of the week, with random scattered storms possible, mainly during the afternoons and evenings. a rather non-descript pre-monsoon pattern...

massive clouds billowed over the mountains again this afternoon, but the result was only some thunder and a few sprinkles... much like on monday. there is still a chance that storms could pop up overnight (like last night), with scattered thunderstorms remaining in the forecast for the next few days. this is typical pre-monsoon himalayan weather; just enough instability to stir up mainly late day storms on just about any day of the week. expect warmer temps as we move toward the weekend...

the recent beautiful weather will continue for at least the first part of today, but changes are on the way. another slow-moving disturbance to our west will begin to influence our area by late this afternoon, and will keep the chance of thunderstorms in the forecast for the next several days. this time of year, any storm has the potential to dump heavy rain in a short period of time, along with strong winds and hail. otherwise, we'll still see periods of sunshine between storms, and temps will be pleasantly warm...

well... the perfect weekend is now wrapping up. thunderstorms have erupted just to our northwest in kashmir, but despite a thick build-up of clouds on the mountain peaks during the afternoon, we managed to stay dry here. looking ahead, the chance of thunderstorms will increase a bit tomorrow and tuesday, but at the moment it looks like they will be of the scattered variety... so don't expect an all-day type of rainfall.

we'll try to make it 'two in a row' for the weekend. yesterday was perfect, and today promises to be almost as good. it'll be a bit warmer today with a small chance of some thunder rumbling around by the late afternoon, but we should still see plenty of sun. storm chances increase significantly by late monday and tuesday, so plan accordingly if you're considering heading into the mountains. tuesday is looking like the least user-friendly day of the coming week.

not sure the weather could have been any more perfect than it was today. hoping to make it a perfect sunday as well, although it will be a bit warmer and more humid, with the possibility of a stray thunderstorm. humidity and storm chances will be on the increase as we head into next week. this time of year, afternoon storms always have the potential to be quite fierce, with strong winds and hail. be prepared if you're going to be out galavanting in the mountains...

we've had less than two inches of rain in the past two months... so as thunderstorms chances increase during the next few days, there won't be much in the way of complaining. temperatures will remain pleasantly warm, but the humidity will keep the "sticky" factor quite high both today and thursday.

tuesday pm... 05.04.10

it has been another hazy day with low visibilities and only dim sunshine. temperatures haven't been warming as dramatically as expected... although the humidity has increased, it's still relatively comfortable. a significant disturbance is gradually making its way towards northern india at the moment, and will pump more moisture our way, and bring an increasing chance of thunderstorms as we head into the latter half of the week...

low: 21C (69F)

WEDNESDAY: partly to mostly cloudy, rather warm and humid. just a small chance of a late day thunderstorm.

tuesday am. 4 may 2010

thick haze and junky air continues to drift north into our area... mountain views will be obscured again today. bummer. temperatures will continue to warm up, and the humidity will increase. all of this is in advance of a storm system that will stir up a few periods of thunderstorms and rain during the latter part of the week. we could see some decent rains (an inch or more) between thursday and saturday...

TUESDAY: hazy, warmer and more humid.
high: 28C (83F)

monday PM. 3 may 2010

hazy skies dominated today... not as much sun as expected. it seems that the dirty and muggy air down in the plains has drifted in our direction. it will take a nice thunderstorm to clear things out! unfortunately, that won't happen for another couple of days. expect increasingly warm and humid weather in the near term. rain chances will gradually increase toward the latter part of the week...

it looks like a pretty significant warming trend is in order for the next couple of days... we could see the highest temperatures of the year by mid-week. rain chances are currently being squashed, but the thunderstorm potential will be increasing during the latter half of the week. it would be really nice to pick up a couple of inches of rain... water tanks are starting to run low again!!

MONDAY: tons of sunshine. warming up.
high: 28C (83F)

MONDAY NIGHT: mostly clear skies. mild.

sunday 2 may 2010

this is the time of the year when the sweltering heat down on the plains tries to bump up against the milder air hanging over the mountains. it only takes a bit of moisture, a pocket of colder air up around 15,000ft, and maybe some twisiting of the jetstream-level winds to crank up a round of thunderstorms. this is the kind of pattern we'll see throughout the coming week... plenty of sunshine and warm temps, but also the possibility of mainly afternoon and night-time thunderstorms passing through.

SUNDAY: warm with plenty of sun. a late day thundershower is possible.
high: 28C (82F)

SUNDAY NIGHT: a random, passing shower or thunderstorm. otherwise partly cloudy.

saturday 1 may 2010

everyone here knows that spring has sprung faster and more aggressively than usual this year. temps have already been close to 30C (85F) for a couple of days during mid-april, and lots of people have been tempted to turn on the fan in the late afternoons and evenings, in an attempt to coax the mountain air indoors.

in the last couple of weeks (since the IPL matches ended) we've had a few nice showers, along with some thunder and wind. it looks like we may be seeing more of that during the coming several days, along with some warmer temperatures during the mid-day. the good news is...with the arrival of thunderstorms, temperatures could dip to around 15 (59C)... natural air conditioning!

SATURDAY NIGHT: an isolated thundershower is possible.

SUNDAY: sunshine with a few clouds.. small chance of a thundershower.
high: 28 (82F)

MONDAY: lots of sun. warm.
