tuesday morning (30nov)>

status quo... dullsville.  this morning's satellite photo shows absolutely nothing going on across virtually all of south asia.  stellar late autumn weather for the next few days...

a reminder that the following temps are for upper mcleod ganj (official temps are always "in the shade", away from direct sunlight).

saturday morning (27nov)>

there is no evidence of any stormy weather on the horizon... sunshine will be plentiful, but weak disturbances can always bring in a few hours of cloudiness from time to time.  none of the computer model guidance is hinting at precipitation right through the next 5-6 days, and shows the general cooling trend continuing.  recently, afternoon high temps have ranged from around 23C (73F) in dharamsala, to just 13C (56F) in dharamkot.  in addition to elevation, of course, as we know here in the mountains, the "feel" of the air is entirely dependent on the presence of sunshine, or lack thereof!

SATURDAY: sunny to partly cloudy skies.
high: 14C (58F)

SATURDAY NIGHT: a few evening clouds possible, otherwise mostly clear.
low: 8C (47F)

SUNDAY: mostly sunny.

wednesday morning (24nov)>

periods of clouds.... periods of sun... the random shower... swings between warmth and cold.  this november has featured more fickle weather than usual.  the sun is back, for now.  but there are a few more little ripples in the upper-air pattern that could stir up some cloudiness, and even some showers at our elevation and a bit of snow above during the next several days.  in general, the official temperature in dharamsala has been trending downward during the last couple of weeks... which is what we would expect this time of year.

WEDNESDAY: mostly sunny skies.
high: 15C (59F)

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: clear to partly cloudy.
low: 9C (48F)

THURSDAY: becoming partly cloudy... slight chance of a brief shower.
high: 14C (58F)

monday morning (22nov)>

there are clouds across parts of the area again early this monday morning, and the satellite pics show a disturbance passing to our north, across kashmir, and another stirring up clouds and a few showers across a wide area of central india.  rain potential in our area exists, but nothing widespread or long-lasting is expected... mainly just the potential for a passing shower or two at some point today.  then, it looks like a stretch of quiet weather and generally stable temperatures will settle in for the balance of the week...

MONDAY: a mix of clouds and sun, with a few scattered showers possible.
high: 16C (60F)

MONDAY NIGHT: partly cloudy, with a slight chance of a shower overnight.
low: 9C (48F)

TUESDAY: sunny to partly cloudy skies.  mild.

friday evening (19nov)>

many of you know that i am "out of station"... in the US until early january.  for that reason, i really appreciate all the emails and facebook messages letting me know what's happening there!  although i can access some data online (satellite pics, computer model data), often the best way to keep on top of the weather is simply to be able to take your own measurements and look out the window!!

our last couple of days of cooler, wetter and cloudier weather has brought a taste of winter to the area... but it looks like increasing sunshine AND increasing temperatures are on the way during the next several days.  please feel free to post any of your own observations in the COMMENTS section of the blog... that way everyone can see them... which is helpful during this time that i am away.

friday morning (19nov)>

some rare november rain has been falling around the area during the past 36 hours.. with even some rumbles of thunder reported.  up to 0.3" (8mm) of rain has been reported in mcleod ganj, with other reports of 0.1" to 0.2" (around 4mm).  all of this is thanks to a weak upper-level disturbance combined with a chunk of moisture that has been drawn northward from central india.  it will take a day or two to clear all of the moisture and clouds out of here... but then we should return to sunshine, along with pleasant fall temps...

thanks to local observers for the breaking info!!

FRIDAY: partly to mostly cloudy skies, with a few showers in the area.
high: 14C (58F)

FRIDAY NIGHT: partly cloudy, with a chance of a shower.
low: 9C (49F)

SATURDAY: still some lingering clouds around, between peeks of sunshine.  still a slight chance of a shower.
high: 15C (59F)

SUNDAY: partly to mostly sunny skies.
high: 16C (61F)

MONDAY: mostly sunny.

thursday morning (18nov)>

there is quite a bit of cloudiness across himachal pradesh early this morning, thanks to an upper level disturbance drifting through.  this disturbance has tapped some of the moisture which has been lingering further south over central india during the past several days... and we cannot completely rule out some scattered rain shower action during the coming 48 hours or so.  considering the season, some snowfall could also occur at the higher elevations.  periods of sunshine will be mixed in between clouds as well... and will return in full force over the weekend...

THURSDAY: partly to mostly cloudy skies, with a risk of a few scattered showers.
high: 15C (59F)

THURSDAY NIGHT: partly cloudy.  still a chance of a shower or two.
low: 9C (49F)

FRIDAY: a mix of clouds and sunshine, with a slight chance of a shower.
high: 16C (60F)

SATURDAY: sunny to partly cloudy skies.
high: 16C (61F)

SUNDAY: mostly sunny and pleasant.

MONDAY: plenty of sun.

tuesday morning (16nov)>

unresticted sunshine has been pretty much the rule recently... and other than the potential for an occasional short-lived period of afternoon cloudiness, that will remain the case.  this is the time of year when the weather pattern tends to be calm and uneventful, and there is nothing indicating that any changes are in sight.  one of our computer models continues to hint at an increase in moisture and shower potential, but so far, that has totally failed to materialize.

TUESDAY: lots of sunshine... pleasant.
high: 16C (61F)

TUESDAY NIGHT: clear skies.
low: 10C (50F)

WEDNESDAY: mostly sunny.
high: 16C (61F)

sunday evening (14nov)>

satellite photos continue to show clear skies across the area, and across all of the western himalayan region for that matter.  a small area of disturbed weather remains parked over rajasthan, providing some unusually cloudy and showery conditions to our south... but none of that has been able to make its way northward.  temperatures have been fairly stationary for a couple of weeks now... and there is still nothing dramatic on the horizon that will bring us a turn to much colder weather.  so... if you like what we have, you'll like the forecast...

SUNDAY NIGHT: mostly clear skies.
low: 9C (49F)

MONDAY: sunny to partly cloudy skies.
high: 16C (61F)

TUESDAY: plenty of sun, with just a few clouds at times.
high: 16C (61F)

friday morning (nov12)>

not much new to report... skies remain mostly clear all the way from the arabian peninsula into northern india and western china this morning.  there are some pockets of haze and clouds which have been forming in the mid-day hours in some of the mountain valleys, but there has been absolutely nothing in the way of rain or snow.  an area of disturbed weather remains entrenched across central india, but all indications are that it won't be heading in our direction.  for that reason... expect very little changes in our recent dull (but relatively pleasant) autumn weather pattern during the next several days...

FRIDAY: sunny to partly cloudy skies.
high: 17C (62F)

FRIDAY NIGHT: mostly clear skies.
low: 11C (51F)

wednesday morning (10nov)>

it's now been several days since any kind of active weather system has come anywhere close to our neighborhood, and this morning, satellite photos show smooth sailing and clear skies from afghanistan and pakistan, across northern india and into tibet.  there is a little area of disturbed weather and some moisture pushing through central india, which has brought a few showers as far north as central UP and even to near agra.  that's as far north as it will get, however... leaving us high and dry.  sunshine will remain the dominant weather feature for the next few days, but we still can't rule out the occasional period of haze and clouds during the mid-day or afternoon hours...those can always materialize with little or no warning.  also, one computer model is suggesting some showers towards the weekend... so we'll keep an eye on that.

WEDNESDAY: sunny to partly cloudy skies.
high: 17C (62F)

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: mostly clear.
low: 11C (51F)

THURSDAY: sunshine, with a period of two of clouds possible.

high: 16C (60F)

SUNDAY: partly cloudy.  still a risk of an isolated shower.

monday morning (8nov)>

the autumn season continues to creep in... slowly slowly slowly.  there are still no significant storm systems expected, but gradually cooler air is seeping southward over the mountains, so our average temperatures will continue to drop as the month progresses.  skies will alernate between periods of nice sunshine, and bouts of haze, fog and some clouds from time to time.  again, rainfall potential will basically be slim and none through the week...

MONDAY: sunshine, with a period or two of clouds possible.
high: 17C (62F)

MONDAY NIGHT: becoming mostly clear.
low: 10C (50F)

TUESDAY: mostly sunny skies.

saturday morning (6nov)>

a very minor upper-level disturbance is moving across northern pakistan and kashmir this morning... stirring up just a few clouds and some scattered rain/snow showers.  almost all of this activity should remain north of our area, but it is probably smart to include a bit of cloudiness and at least a slight chance of a random shower in the forecast for today.  otherwise, things will remain quiet right through the next five days, as this disturbance quickly moves off to the east and dies.  still no signs of a dramatic turn to colder temperatures... so expect the pleasant autumn weather to continue.

SATURDAY: sunny to partly cloudy skies, with a slight chance of a brief shower or thundershower during the afternoon.
high: 17C (63F)

SATURDAY NIGHT: a random shower in the evening??  otherwise mostly clear skies.

thursday morning (4nov)>

well... this is the time of year when the weather can settle into long stretches of generally sunny, dry and pleasantly cool conditions.  the upper-air pattern is very quiet, with temperatures aloft running a bit above normal for early november.  these stable conditions will prevail right through the forecast period, with little indication of anything other than some occasional cloudiness from time to time.  moisture is seriously lacking, so it will be difficult to stir up any significant rainfall.

THURSDAY: sunny in the morning, with perhaps a few clouds in the PM.
high: 18C (64F)

THURSDAY NIGHT: mostly clear skies.
low: 12C (53F)

FRIDAY: sunny to partly cloudy.
high: 18C (64F)

SATURDAY: sunshine, with just a few clouds.
high: 18C (64F)

SUNDAY: lots of sun... seasonably mild.

MONDAY: more of the same... nice autumn sunshine.

tuesday evening (2nov)>

beautiful sunny skies have been the norm for the last two or three days, along with temperatures which are slightly above normal for this time of year.  expect more of the same, except for possibly an increase in high, cirrus clouds later in the week, as a minor disturbance in the upper-air flow moves across northern india.  the atmosphere is dry as a bone, so it will be hard to squeeze out any significant rainfall, but the sunshine may be dimmed just a bit.  temps will remain fairly steady, right into the weekend...

TUESDAY NIGHT: clear skies.
low: 12C (53F)

WEDNESDAY: sunshine, with a few high clouds at times.
high: 17C (63F)

THURSDAY: sunny to partly cloudy.
high: 18C (64F)

FRIDAY: partly cloudy... just a slight chance of a brief sprinkle/shower.
high: 17C (63F)

SATURDAY: mostly sunny skies.

SUNDAY: plenty of sunshine...

monday evening (1nov)>

the weather pattern is about as quiet and dull as it can possibly get.  and there appears to be nothing on the way during the next several days to give us a jolt.  actually, this is the weather that lots of people wait all year for... day after day of nice sunshine... low humidity... mild temperatures by day and cool temps by night.  there have been years past when this kind of weather continued all the way until the very end of december!  we'll see if that happens this year... or not.

MONDAY NIGHT: mostly clear skies.
low: 11C (52F)

TUESDAY: lots of sunshine.
high: 18C (64F)

WEDNESDAY: sunny skies.
