guarded optimism... (am.17.sep.11)>

skies are partly cloudy at sunrise this morning, as things begin to dry out from the last three days of heavy rainfall.  there was just a trace of rain overnight... leaving our total since wednesday afternoon at 6.37" (16.2cm).  i've recorded a low temperature before dawn of 61.7F (16.5C).

the weather system we've been talking about for much of the week is now weakening as it passes across northern india... but it has done its job.  winds in the mid- and upper-levels of the atmosphere have shifted back to a more westerly direction, and already, drier air is filtering in.  there remains some lingering moisture in the lowest layers of the atmosphere, and along with the obviously very wet ground, it will take some time for things to truly dry out.  but... the overall weather pattern has now entered the phase we need to see to put an end to the monsoon season... so we'll be watching the transition during the coming week or so.

be aware that there could still be a few scattered showers and perhaps a thundershower, mainly during the afternoons in the days ahead, but probablities of significant rainfall will be decreasing, and amounts will diminish.  as usual, i'll pass along any "official" info from the india meteorological department regarding the retreating monsoon...
