maxing out... (am.25.may.12)>

We still have a totally cloud-free sky at sunrise on this Friday morning.  My overnight low temp of 73.0F (22.8C) is the warmest I have recorded this season, and the warmest since the 16th of May, 2011!

If we can hold onto the sunshine today, there's a good chance that we'll achieve the warmest high temperature of 2012 -- 88.5F (31.4C) is the current high mark.  Our ridge of high pressure which has been in place during the past 48-60 hours or so is going to be breaking down later today, however, as a fast-moving upper-level disturbance sweeps in from the west.  This system has very little moisture to work with, but it will contain colder air aloft, which is going to increase instability as it passes over this very warm air in the lower layers of the atmosphere.  I think there's a good chance that we'll see at least some isolated thunderstorm activity as early as this evening, through Saturday, and perhaps into Sunday as well.  By late Sunday, this disturbance will weaken and lift rapidly to our northeast, allowing a broader and stronger ridge of warm high pressure to build in for the majority of next week.

As we experienced back on Monday and Tuesday, temperatures are going to be very dependent on shower/thunderstorm development.  The surface airmass is going to remain very warm, but if we come under a thundershower, then some of that colder air aloft will be brought down to the surface, providing some all-natural air-conditioning.  But by Monday as rain chances diminish again, we'll be back up around the very warmest of the season for an extended period...
