the plunge... (pm.11.dec.12)>

Tuesday's stats:

Low temp: 37.6F (3.1C) -- around 11:00am
High temp: 48.0F (8.9C) -- 3:45pm
Rainfall: 0.33" (8mm)
Snowfall: trace

What a brutal slap in the face today was, as compared to the long stretch of unseasonably mild weather we were enjoying last week!  Skies are mostly cloudy just after sunset this evening, but we did manage some glimpses of sunshine during the mid- to late afternoon which allowed our temps to rally a bit.  Still, today has been the coldest day of this winter season -- both high and low temps.

The upper-level disturbance responsible for today's action rapidly deepened and intensified just to our northwest early this morning.  It was able to tap into a bit more moisture than computer models were suggesting, so precipitation amounts were proportionately greater as well.  There were light accumulations of snow as low as Gallu Temple, with some snowflakes reported in Naddi, Dharamkot, and even in the main square of Mcleod for a few minutes right around 11:00am.  From the reports I'm hearing, snowfall amounts of greater than 6" occurred up toward Triund.

And we're not finished.  After a bit of a break in the action during the coming 24-36 hours, an even stronger system is being advertised by computer models, upper-air and satellite data for the latter part of the week.  We may see a bit of light precipitation between now and then, but it looks like we have a chance of picking up some moderate to heavy rain and snow in our immediate neighborhood starting on Thursday, and continuing into the weekend.  With a very cold air mass firmly in place, accumulating snow will occur at unusually low elevations for mid-December -- and that may include McLeod Ganj proper.  Stay tuned for regular updates throughout the week...
