january excitement... (pm.18.jan.13)>

Update Saturday morning@ 7:25am... For those of you who have power or a good battery, or onlne access -- I have about 6 inches of snow here at the top of McLeod which fell overnight.  It is already melting, as the temp is up to 36.0F (2.2C), after a low of 32.5F (0.3C).  A gorgeous site this morning if you are up early enough to see it before it falls off the trees and gets all slushy!  My laptop battery is almost gone, as I've had no power since early last evening.  Thanks to those of you who have been following along the last few days.  I've had more than 2000 site visits since Wednesday, which is by far the most in a 3-day period in the 2.5 year history of the weather geek.!

Update @ 8:47pm... From the satellite view, it looks like the upper-level circulation center of our storm system is almost right overhead... somewhere over western Himachal Pradesh.  The snow has turned back to rain here at my location, but we have about 1.5" of slushy snow on the ground, as the temperature hovers right around 35.0F (1.7C).  Total (melted) precipitation since yesterday morning in my rain gauge = exactly 1.5" (3.8cm).

Update @ 6:44pm... Moderate intensity snowfall is occurring in McLeod, and is just barely starting to accumulate on the streets in the main market area.  That was a super-fast change -- no rain mixed in at all.  It is pure snow, and it is beautiful.

Just as I prepare to hit the "publish" button, I see that we now have a complete change to snow in the main market here in McLeod, so what I've just composed is already out of date!  Of course updates to follow...

Friday's stats:

Low temp: 34.2.F (1.2C) -- around 7:00pm
High temp: 46.0F (7.8C) -- 10:45am
Rainfall: 1.10" (2.8cm)
Storm total: 1.50" (3.8cm)
Snowfall: 1.5" (3.8cm)

It is totally cloudy this evening with occasional fog, and steady light to moderate rain which has been occurring since the middle of the afternoon.  Today has been generally dismal, other than an hour or so of slightly brighter conditions during the late morning... but even then, the winds were howling.  The snow line has been steadily progressing downhill all day, but still remains just above McLeod.  There was a brief changeover to snow just above my house at the very top of town shortly after 3:00pm, but then it went back to rain.  Temperatures have been near the coldest of this winter season.

The culprit for this inclement weather is a low pressure center churning just to our southwest over central Punjab as of 5:30pm.  The counter-clockwise circulation around this system has kept the moisture flowing in from the south and southeast all day, but as it passes almost directly overhead later tonight, the flow will turn back to the north-northwest, which will cut off the moisture source and gradually put an end to our rain and/or snow.  In the meantime, we still have several hours to keep an eye on that snow line, since it could progress further down the mountain before the precipitation ends.  The tricky part is that the coldest air will flow in after most of the moisture has moved off to the east, but we shall see what happens by early tomorrow morning.

A turn to drier and much quieter weather is on the way for the new week, although temperatures will stay on the chilly side.  There is a little disturbance coming through late Tuesday into Wednesday, but it looks pretty insignificant at the moment.
